What a dim room actually needs

The instinct with a dark photograph is to add contrast, and it is almost always the wrong instinct. A picture taken in poor light is not low in contrast because the scene was flat — it is low in contrast because everything in it landed in the bottom third of the sensor’s range, where the levels are few and far apart. Adding contrast there pushes the darkest parts to pure black and takes what little detail survived with them.

What it needs instead is room. The shadow lift opens the bottom of the range where the picture is actually living, the exposure moves the whole thing up to where the eye expects to find it, and the contrast control comes down rather than up, because the stretch has already added more than enough separation. That is what the low-light starting point does, and every number in it is sitting on a slider you can move.

The part that is unavoidable

Noise was always there

Lifting shadows does not create noise. The noise was recorded at the moment of capture, sitting in the dark end where it was too compressed to see; opening that end spreads it out along with the detail beside it. This is why a low-light photograph looks grainier after correction than before, and why the honest description of what happened is “the noise became visible” rather than “the tool added noise”.

The lift stops short of black

The shadow curve is masked: it peaks around a quarter of the way up the range and falls back to nothing at pure black. That shape is deliberate. A lift that also raises the darkest pixel turns blacks into a flat grey, which is the single most recognisable sign of a photograph that has been through an automatic pass — and it costs you the one part of a dim frame that still looked convincing.

Colour comes back last

Dim light desaturates everything, so a little colour goes back in at the end. It is weighted by how saturated each pixel already is, which means a flat wall recovers while anything that survived with its colour intact barely moves. Chroma noise reduction — smoothing the coloured speckle that a high ISO leaves behind — is a separate stage and is not in this release.
