Form photo specifications in India

Application portals ask for files inside narrow pixel and KB bands, and the bands differ from portal to portal. These are the ones we could read in the authority's own document, with the date we read them.

Passport Seva normally captures the photo at the Passport Seva Kendra, and no upload specification was verified. PAN and Aadhaar photo and signature specifications were not verified from a primary document either. They are not presets on this site; use Custom and type the numbers your form gives you. They will be added only with a primary source and a date.

Reading a specification

Three things trip people up. First, KB: portals rarely say whether 1 KB is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes, so a file that is exactly on the limit can pass on one and fail on another — keep a margin. Second, centimetres: a size in cm only becomes pixels at a stated DPI, and a DPI is only a label in the file's header; the pixels are what the portal measures. Third, minimums: a minimum KB is there to reject thumbnails, and padding a file with junk to reach it does not make the photo acceptable — some portals strip the junk and the file fails again.

Taking the photo

Stand facing a window in daylight against a plain light wall, with the phone at eye level and no flash. Fill most of the frame with head and shoulders, and do not filter the picture. A good original needs only a light correction, and fits a small KB band with more detail left in it.

What a tool can check

This site checks pixels, file size, format, aspect and density against these numbers and tells you each result in words. It cannot tell you whether a portal will accept the photo: portals also check the face, background, expression and age of the photo, and that decision is theirs.

  • Figures change with each recruitment notice; check the current notice for your application.
  • A preset more than a year old is shown with its last-checked date in amber.
